Meditation requires the obliteration of ego - this is the terrifying gate that we will one day stand before if we sit in silence for long enough. Our ego contains all of what we know of ourselves – our memories, our attachments to people and things, our identity on Earth. But we cannot pass through the gate while still burdened with these things. At the decisive moment, the opening gate feels much like death, our own death and the death of those we love. And we feel guilt for choosing the death of these things in that moment. If we let go of everything we are...what is left of us? What do we become as we pass through? We must gain a level of comfort with the loss of these things that we hold so dear before the secrets will be revealed. But fear not – we will return.
